Description

Simple and convenient, but reliable where it really counts.

If there's ever a time simplicity really matters, it's in the backcountry. ARVA took that approach when making the all-digital Evolution 3+ Avalanche Beacon for safe mountain travel. First of all, when you clip on this 220g device, it turns on and transmits a signal so your always beeping at the trailhead. But with three antennas, an easy-to-decipher display, and the ability to identify and mark multiple burials, you're getting more than just the bare-bones features to rely on during your trip into avalanche terrain.
  • An average digital search band width of 40m lets you sweep the debris field without missing a signal
  • In its LCD display, the Evolution 3+ uses arrows and distance values to guide you to the buried signal as well as give you updates on your battery status
  • The beacon also detects multiple victims and lets you mark them as you locate them and move on to the next signal

Great for rescue, poor durability

I bought one of these mid this season. I did some beacon practices with friends to get the feel for the new beacon before going out for any hikes. As far as pinpointing a location goes, this beacon far out-performed my friends BCA Tracker's, both in speed, and precision, as well as distance it found a signal at. It was also the fastest beacon found when it was the one buried for practice. The 3 antenna's and the screen and interface are awesome, and if your buried this is what you want your buddy wearing.....

HOWEVER - after riding with this beacon on for only 7 or 10 days, i managed to break it. I took a drop (in-bounds) to a wipe out. I was fine, the worst of it was having to hike back up and retrieve a ski i lost. Nothing out of the ordinary, an every day wipe out. As a result however, the screen cracked, and no longer had a display. In testing it out, i found it was still transmitting a signal, and putting it in search mode it still beeped (faster the closer and better pointed at another beacon you were) as it was supposed to, but it would have been impossible to find anyone with it. It made me feel confident that if i had been in a slide, it was still transmitting and i would still have been able to be found, so i made the decision to give them one more try and replace mine with another of the same model, at no cost to me (Thanks Backcountry.com for your awesome warranty and return work!) =) And so far my new one has had no issues (but i only have had it out 4 or 5 times so far). Ill be sure to post a further review if it fails as well.

Overall: Great product, works excellently and quickly, and is VERY easy to use, but if your worried about durability, and having a 100% chance your beacon still works AFTER being in a slide, even if you hit a tree or slide off a cliff, this is probably not the MOST durable beacon on the market!

Yes, one of the best snowboarders in the world uses the Evo 3+. This beacon is amazingly fast and simple to use. Proven in Europe for years, the Evo is the best value beacon with Multi-victim masking on the market today.

Most bang for the buck!

This is an amazing unit! We tested this unit in an Avy course last week against other digital units. Not only was it quick and accurate, showing two OR three plus was a great during multi burial scenarios, and the marking feature was very easy to manage.

Super easy to use beacon with mark feature

The reason I like the Evo3+ is that it's very simple to use and has all the features you need in a basic beacon - a foolproof way of switching between send and search and an easy marking feature (which you won't find in similar-priced models).

Problem

Hi there! I bought this arva evo3+ beacon and figured out that there is no leash from beacon to harness, so it seems be not very usefull, especially on pinpoint phase of search.

Responded on

Doesn't the shoulder strap function as a leash? In my testing all you do is unbuckle the waist belt and you have the same range most around your midsection (8-12 in.) as most leashes offer. Yes, for pinpoint against the snow you may want to remove it from your shoulder, but you would have to unclip a leash for that. The thing I like about this setup is you will never be wearing it and forget to turn it on like I have when I used the Tracker.

The beacon leash is designed with simplicity in mind - clip on the shoulder strap/harness and the beacon turns on. Pinpoint searching works fine if you unclip the waist belt and simply bend over if you need to get closer to the snow.

Arva offers an aftermarket Evo 3+ Harness that allows it to quick in and out access and has the mobility same as any other harness out there. It is around $40. Even with this add on you are still less than any other 3-Antenna with display and marking function.

Great Buy!

This is a great deal for a 3-antenna transceiver. Has all the dummy-proof features the more expensive digital models, and seems easy to use, even the multi-burial function is easy and clear. To save some research Arva has been making transceivers for about 20 years but have just recently been imported to the U.S. This is the product 90% of folks should use. Would recommend it!
