All you need now is a beacon.

The Backcountry Access Arsenal Companion Blade Shovel might seem like just another avalanche shovel. But lurking in the lightweight aluminum handle is a full-length 240cm probe that’s ready for instant deployment. This two-in-one avy tool prepares you for backcountry rescue scenarios and streamlines your kit when you’re running slackcountry laps or headed out for a lightweight tour.

is the handle on this tool telescopic or does it collapse in any way. I'm looking for compact yet effective gear for my avy training next season. Also, it has to be storable for split boarding. Seems like a great concept but would it work for my needs?

Great Shovel - Long Handle

Big blade, flat shoulders (for foot placement), solid feel, and a long handle (more on this in a sec). Probe integration is excellent, easy insertion/deployment, no rattles.

As for the handle - nice that it is long for digging (very important), but it is a lot longer than their other handles which isn't great for packing (what you'll do with it most of the time). Too long for me to wear without a pack (but I'm short) and too long for the BCA stash packs! If you are looking to get a full BCA outfit, go with a separate probe and shovel, handle is shorter and probe is thicker (stronger).

Nice to have two in one

The handle of the shovel is a little bigger than some others, but the idea of having the probe and shovel together is great.

Great Shovel

I have used this shovel for the past couple of years. It is quite durable, although Ive only used it to build jumps. Ive packed down probably 120 jumps with this and its still giong strong. The added probe helps too, although luckly i havent had to use it yet and hopefully never will.
