Bern Watts Hard Hat w/Knit Liner - 2010

While Bern’s Watts Hard Hat probably isn’t the best choice to wear for your construction job, it’s versatile enough to be your go-to helmet for all of your skate, ski, bike and snowboard needs. Its hardshell construction encases a core of Brock Foam, which can take repeated hits without requiring replacement. And whether you’re on snow, at the skate park, or on single track, the visor brim improves visibility by shading your brow on sunny days and by keeping precipitation from falling right in front of your eyes.

  • Hard Hat version with Brock Foam is not EN/AST/CPSC certified for severe single impacts, but it is able to withstand multiple, lighter hits without requiring replacement (as compared to Zipmold and EPS foam, which is certified but must be replaced after a single hit, however hard or soft)
  • Sink Fit design fits the lid around your head (rather than on letting it ride on top), providing both advanced comfort and an ultra-low profile
  • Removable knit liner allows for year-round action-sport use—leave it in to fight off the winter chill and take it out when the weather warms up
  • Removable vent piece lets you air it out on warm days and trap in extra heat when it’s cold

Bottom Line: Say it 10 times fast: Hard Hat.

Best Helmet for the non-pro rider.

By:

In terms of looks, this is one of the best helmets out there. In terms of safety, it isn't meant to be used for impact off XL kickers, so clearly you shouldn't get this helmet if you like grabbing big air on a daily basis. However, for people that have wide heads (please don't make joke), you might have to try it out first. For myself, I usually have to grab XL for helmets and even then they still feel too narrow most of the time. This helmet is no exception (didn't buy it for myself this time). So if you have a wide head, better try before buy.

Looks great!

Just picked up the Watts hardhat in matte black. I haven't ridden with it on yet, but I tried it on and it seems to fit very well. Word of warning: I wear a size 7-1/4 hat and the Bern sizing guide says I should be in a size Large helmet, but when I tried on the large it seemed a bit too loose with the liner in. With the liner removed, way too loose. So I ended up getting the Medium even thought it's a bit snug....I'm counting on the foam pushing out a bit as I wear it more.

It looks great. One of the most low-profile protective lids I've found. My Anon hawkeye goggles seem to fit well with the helmet (see attached pic).

A drawback for some could be that it's not technically a "helmet", i.e. it doesn't meet the testing standards necessary to certify it as a high-impact protective helmet. For me, I currently ride with no head protection, so even this "hardhat" is 1000% better than my current situation. I'm also not chucking myself off of huge jumps though, so the worst I expect is a little tumble down the hill or off a flat-down box.

I would have liked to see some adjustability built in but there is none. You just have to pick the closest size for your head and live with it possibly being a little too loose or a little too snug. Competitors' helmets go for less cash and have more adjustment capability.

I'll update my review after actually riding with the helmet.

Looks good, but...

As far as helmets go, this helmet looks dope- so it has that going for it. Aside from that, the helmet offers minimal protection and does not meet any recognized safety standards. Also, it seems to be really uncomfortable. I have worn this 4 times, and each time I have gotten a headache within 3 minutes.

i originally didnt want a helmet but had to get one. this helmet is pretty dope for a helmet. fits good, is warm, and is one of few helmets that works well with electric eg2 goggles. its also very low profile, so you dont look like you've got a massive dome going down the slopes
