A backcountry suit of armor.

When you're deep in the backcountry far from any chairlifts, resorts, hot tubs, or help, you can't afford to have your outerwear fail you. The Burton Men's AK 3L Hover Gore-Tex Jacket is built with proven materials to help it thrive in the harshest conditions and provide you with no-nonsense function for comfort and mobility whether you're hiking up or shredding down.

Three-layer Gore-Tex Pro Shell is lightweight yet super-tough to resist rips and tears, and it's guaranteed waterproof for ultimate protection from the elements plus super breathable so you won't feel clammy. Fully taped seams with Gore Seam tape prevent moisture from seeping in through the cracks. The AK fit features engineered articulation to allow for total freedom of movement, and it allows room to layer underneath without being baggy or bulky. Zippered underarm vents let you dump heat when you're huffing it to the peak, and the contoured hood with a micro-adjust cinch shields your head from the storm when the weather suddenly turns on you. A removable stretch powder skirt with jacket-to-pant interface keeps the snow out on waist-deep days and forms a nearly impenetrable snow barrier when paired with compatible Burton pants.

Great jacket lacks features.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I love the way this jacket fits... really articulated and comfortable. 5'10" 190lbs large is perfect. Looks great on. 3l Goretex, and has quality zippers. This is a great shell but lacks some really basic features. For $600 dollars there should be nothing lacking.

The biggest deal is that there is no liner on the inside. At $600 this shell should feel amazing when you put it on. Instead it sort of feels like a rain jacket. Thier is no mesh in the pit zip vents so when open, they are WIDE OPEN and exposed to snow, mesh seems obvious and is pretty much standard on all snow jackets.
Their is also no pass pocket, so your pass is free to fall out of whatever pocket you put it in. Not a big deal but a button on the removable waist gater to keep is from unzipping from the jacket.

All and all I'm happy with the performance and fit, but the money I'd say it isn't worth it. I paid $300 and I feel like its worth about that much. The $600 price tag is REDICULOUS!!!

Bomber Shell

Awesome shell, what you would expect as a flagship 3L Gore-Tex Pro shell jacket from AK. Fabrication details are great. Couple of comments on things they could improve...
I prefer thumb-hole gaiters over the whole-wrist gasket-cuffs that come on this jacket. I tuck my over-gloves between the jacket cuff and the gasket-cuff anyway so this isn't a deal-breaker for me, just a little weird.
The internal audio pocket doesn't fit my cell phone (Galaxy S5). How many people own smaller, dedicated MP3/iPods anymore? Thankfully I don't listen to music while riding.
I love that the neck collar is independent of the hood. I rarely ride with the hood up. With it down on more traditional jackets I find that it pulls down the whole collar, exposing my face. This lets me ditch my face mask in most situations.
The season pass holder is on the powder skirt. No big deal for me, but for someone with bibs who wants to ditch the skirt, you lose your pass holder.
It fits true to size, not a super baggy fit, but definitely leaves some room for layers, a necessity with a shell like this. I find the sleeves are a little longer than they need to be, but not a big deal

top threads for riding

dang this jacket is the shizzle (same as all Burton AK stuff). Not cheap, but it's top feckin quality. I have the 2013/14 mo fiya and I loved it last season (and this season). Totally waterproof as advertized, great big collar to hide in when the wind's blasting, great pockets and i like the cuff gaskets to keep the snow out. I'm 5ft 7 and the small fits good with plenty room for layers but not too baggy. Highly recommend the Burton AK gear, bomber.

My go-to shell

A no frills, super functional shell... durable, water proof and crazy breathable. I was somewhat skeptical initially, but the gore-tex pro shell material seems legit. Zippers are bomber and pockets functional. The collar works well but would be even more effective if it was slightly taller.
