Burton wheelie sub
you wouldn't believe all the comments i've gotten on this bag! i basically live out of my luggage- on the road 9 months out of the year, so this is my new dresser. the bag is put together very well- the wheels, the pull-out handle, and the overall construction is nicely done. there's a lot of cheap luggage out there, and this is definitely two steps above any rolling duffel i've owned.
I was really impressed with this bag. It is rather large, but despite that it's pretty nice. My husband and I were able to travel to Costa Rica for 8 days and use the one bag. The bonus feature is that it separates into two bags, so you can avoid any over-weight charges if need be. The space in this bag is great...especially for an overpacker like me. The side clasps seem to come undone from time to time, but I don't find that to be a big deal. The bag manuvers well and it is so easy to spot in the baggage claim area. Love that. It is great for snowboarders. I use it on my trips to CO.
So....the bag can be split in two, that's...
So....the bag can be split in two, that's great! But let's say I want to go on a short trip that only requires 1/2 of this huge bag. Is it possible to just travel/check one half of it? Will it stay closed properly? Trying to decide if it's best to get this one, HUGE bag which is good for a lot of my current traveling (dancer on tour, need to live out of a very durable suitcase for months at a time), OR if I should go for 2 smaller sized-bags, that way I'm pretty much covered size-wise for any trip I take. I was really thinking I'd love to only haul one bag around the airport, even if it is huge, but if I could just travel with half of it should that be all I need at some point, is this possible?
Everybody comments on how big it is. I reply it is not always so much the size of the wave, but, the quality that really matters. I've hauled ski boots, tri-pods, craftsman tool sets, car batteries, as well as my usual 6 pairs of various shoes & threads all over the continent. if it gets too heavy for an airline I delight in the look the luggage check-in gives me as I zip it in two pieces in the blink of an eye. So far it rates a (9) for quality, looks & ingenuity. We'll see after 50 more trips. I have put Tumi's as well as cheap Costco offerings to shame.

Great piece of gear, got a bunch of compliments on its style during my travels.
The skateboard wheels are awsome as well, they roll nice and quiet and absorb any bumps with ease.
The bag itself is large and can accomodate a week or 2 week long trip easily.
Being able to split the bag into 2 pieces actually came in handy on my way home, I was able to save $50 bucks in airport weight fee's by splitting it and checking 2 bags and the airport attendant got a kick out of it.
I didn't give this product a 5 because it was entirely too big for my needs. Its a great product though. It actually separates into two bags, sweet. It was more than I needed though.
Awesome bag! Just one small drawback...
The bag is more of an orange/black, than a red/black check but that was cool. It really stands out when traveling and its super easy to pack. The only drawback is that the outside zipper flaps are not true pockets. Instead, they just open up to the contents of the bag. I'm guessing this probably has some purpose for a snowboarder, but for me, it would be nice to have pockets. Awesome bag though! Oh, be careful when pulling the straps tight when closing. The plastic clasp broke off the very first time I packed it. I'm hoping to get a replacement. I think that was just a fluke.
Not everything I thought it would be
The bag itself is nice. The compartments are nice and big and the zippers and such are great.
The wheels on this thing are not protected enough and will get popped off by the airlines! I had this happen to me on my second trip. Then its a real pain to move this bag around. Secondly, the Ixiom wheel replacement that is supposed to be so easy to replace? Yea, thats IF you can get them. Ive been trying to get a pair delivered to my parents for the last 3 weeks and Im in Africa right now with a broken bag with and no replacement wheels in site. Also, what they fail to mention is you can only get the wheel/axle assembly from Burton, which again they are out of stock and Ive been trying to get one for the last three weeks. I dont know how you can let something like this go out of stock on a new bag when your the only supplier?
If you look you will see the wheel is exposed, meaning the axle goes through the wheel and screws into the bag. Most high quality bags have the wheels internal, meaning the wheels are placed away from the corners..obviously the wheel/axle is a weak point and real easy to break off especially if its on the corner!
This bag is a perfect compliment to my Burton Wheelie Locker. Plenty of space, very easy to open and close, and sick styling. Also, it is very lightweight, which allows it to be filled with clothing and remain under the 50-lb. limit when flying. Sweet!
This thing is huge! Easy to maneuver, separates easily. Comes with self=packing linen bag inside that was a nice surprise. Fit everything for a week in CO in easily. Nice set up with external and internal padding - it even separates into two different bags so you can get your gear in under 50# for the airport!
This is an awesome bag. It is very big. What I like about it is that it's the same volume as my other big bag, but this is taller and narrower, making it easier to move through the airports. It is made from excellent heavy duty material, and I really like the access pockets so you don't have to open up the entire bag to get to your stuff.
I do have a few concerns:
1. The wheels are screwed in with the new "Ixiom wheel replacement system", so that its easy to swap them out if they need replacement. Unfortunately this means the wheels are unprotected. After my second air trip with it, the airline managed to rip out one of the wheels.
I called Burton about buying replacements, and they said they will send me a free replacement! so I was very happy with the customer service.
2. Being that this is a travel bag, security is a big issue to me because I fly around a lot. There is no way to lock the main zipper or the top pocket (although the top pocket does not have a way to get to the main compartment). This is because they are single zippered and do not have anything for a TSA lock to lock too...
Besides these two concerns, this bag is excellent, and if these two issues were fixed...it would be bar far the best travel bag.
Okay so I got this luggage for a week trip to NY. I must say it's badass. Only thing is it is HUGE. Not really idea for common uses or a weekend trip. I was debating on whether to get the version on size smaller, but it was only $30 cheaper.
the wheelie sub is the best suitcase ever
i came across the burton wheelie sub after weeks of looking around at the luggage stores in san francisco for an alternative to a hiking backpack for my month-long trip across europe. for many reasons i was opposed to traveling with a backpack, but most of the suitcases i found were either too heavy, hideous, or cost $300 or more.
with a week left before my departure, and ordered this bag from luggage.com. then two days later they told me that it wouldn't arrive for several weeks. i decided to cancel the order and get it here, and the bag was in stock and arrived just in time.
about the bag: it is amazing!!! it looks great, it is lighter than you'd expect, it is EXTREMELY durable. i filled the bag with 50 lbs of crap and dragged it down stairs at the train stations. the skateboard wheels are very strong, and they roll very well over every surface that you encounter on a trip around europe (dirt, gravel, cobblestones, cracks). you can fit endless amounts of stuff into the bag (and i mean ENDLESS) because it stretches in most directions. the feature that allows the bag to zip in half is very very handy... it was useful when we were traveling on trains and the whole bag wouldnt fit in the overhead compartments, or when we had to carry the bag up five floors of european spiral stairs.
the bag really took a beating and came back looking pretty new. my only warning is that if you intend to buy this bag and use it on a cross-continent trip involving train stations, metro stations, and stairs... then make sure that you have a willing travel partner who will carry the other end up the stairs, because elevators are not always available. if you do not have a strong man to help you, then i suggest that you get the wheelie bag that is one size smaller than this one, or else pack very very light.
if you are not huge shoppers, this bag might even be enough space for two for a couple of weeks.
BEST IN SHOW LUGGAGE
I just got back from Valle Navajo Chile- and i took a wheelie board bag, and the double deck. I brought it packed to the brim, and shopped like crazy when i was there. thanks to the expansion zones- i was still able to cram everything in there. I only review things i actually use as a rep. I have 7 collections of Burton luggage. I LOVE IT, it functions, it doesn't blow out. The wheels are SKATE WHEELS. This print is SICK- you can make sure your luggage makes it off the tarmac because you can SPOT IT FROM THE PLANE!
