DAKINE's powerhouse pack for day trips into the backcountry.

If you're heading into the backcountry but don't want a massive load on your back, look to the DAKINE Heli Pro 20L Backpack. With 1200 cubic inches of interior space, it gives you a not-too big, but not-too small option for forays into the great white yonder. So pack some extra clothes and a lunch into the main compartment, slide your avie shovel and probe into the quick-access front pocket, and skin up. If you have to hike, strap your board(s) in the ski or snowboard carry systems. DAKINE tricked out this pack with a fleece-lined goggle pocket, a waterproof camera pocket, and an insulated sleeve for your hydration system.

nice pack, more for boarders than skiers

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Big, durable pack. Works well, lots of storage. Ski holder works but isn't the easiest thing to use. Snowboard holder works great. I would recommend it for snowboarders or on mountain but I wouldn't use it for ski touring if you think you will need to hike in/out of where you're going.

I wanna store my h20, goggles, shovel, camera, herb, and at least 6 beers... Do I need the 20L or is the 16L big enough? The 20L DLX doesn't come in the color I want, is the DLX significantly better?

Responded on

i think 20L will be the minimum size for your needs.

My favorite pack

Dakine makes some of the greatest pack out there! The heli pro has plenty of room for all your gear and sits real comfy on your back. My favorite features on this pack are the padding on the snowboard carry system and the pocket on the waist belt. Buy this pack trust me you wont be disappointed.

where do you put your shovel handel and probe, on the side or in the pack

probe on the side, handle inside. or the other way around, looks like the description suggests "slide your avie shovel and probe into the quick-access front pocket"

Handle goes on the side... Probe goes in main compartment...

Day Hikers Delight

I have been rocking the Dakine Heli-pro for a year now and I absolutely love it. I think the best part about it is that it is not oversized, but I can fit everything I need in it for a day of hiking and boarding. Not much for padding on this pack, but it fine cause I never carry more than 20lbs worth of stuff(if that!). I use a camelbak for hydration and the insulated sleeve in the arm strap really helps out on those cold days. Lots of loops, lots of pockets. Great pack. Highly recommended

Sick pack

I've got older version of heli pro as well and i must say it's perfect in every aspect. There's enough room for your backcountry tools plus for some extra layers of thermo and some lunch. Also using 2l hydration system which is a bit nightmare to put through shoulder strap (there's on/off leaver on tubes) but when it's on place, the whole system works great.Love the zip on shoulder strap for hydration tubes to hide in. It's comfortable to carry skis. Bag doesn't travel all around your bag. I tried to carry skis and my brothers snowboard and it hold pretty well. Back padding is solid so when u get some bad landing it's not so bad for your back.U gotta love the waist pocket. It's small but ideal for your keys for car. I didn't experience any problems since i got this back, nothing broken, no holes in bag from skis edges etc. OVERAL - u gonna love this

Better than a pack mule.

This pack hauls. It has tons of space without being bulky, and is really comfortable. It does what it should do, plain and simple. It's pretty adjustable, carries skis nicely, and has enough room for whatever you're carrying. The internal bladder pocket is great and the zippered strap compartment for the mouthpiece keeps the tube from freezing. The straps are all rather long, but a pair of scissors or some duct tape fixes that and allows you to dial in your fit. Great colors too. Overall great pack.

Solid

Good pack, has plenty of room for food and other junk. Can hold reasonably wide skis- 140mm shoveled Seths fit throught the loops. The camera pocket on the waist is kind of small.

Has more Features than I will probably ever need!

I love the new Heli Pro but the belt tends to get annoying when just using the bag for school. I'm still waiting for the snow fall to go test it out for its sole purpose. HURRY UP SNOW!!! Still, it holds a lot of books and is comfortable at the same time. It has tons of straps and features. I don't see myself using the quick-draw ice axe holder though lol. But that's just me.

Dakine Heli Pro or BD Covert? I just got the covert but don't love the lack of features and am thinking of sending it back for a heli pro. both get good reviews but what everyone out there do? (I ski in CO and do LOTS of hiking hauling gotamas to all areas....) Any suggestions would be helpful thanks!

Sweat pack for all around gear. I haven't had a chance to use it up on the mountain but can't wait. The bag is not as big as my last pack but it keeps me from packing too much crap. Everything looks and feels solid. Note I think it takes a full month to break in the pads. Shotgun Red all the way!

Sweet pack!!

This pack is sweet for snowboarding. Very comfortable I hardly even notice it. With the waist and chest straps it make this pack a very versatile pack, nice for day hikes, snowboarding, riding motorcycles, and even walking around San Fransisco. I never had my water freeze even when I was at Whistler. The felt pouch for your glasses is very nice, though i wished it was bigger for my larger goggles. I recommend this pack to everyone that love's the outdoors.

Will it fit a pair of Oakley Crowbar or Wisdoms, the goggles pocket seems a bit small...?

Best Answer Responded on

Nope not too small for some Crowbars for sure. They do fit in a little snug, but they do fit.

Can this backpack be used for everyday school and will it be able to carry a 43" longboard?

Best Answer Responded on

This'll be fine for everyday school use, but it definitely will not carry a 43" longboard inside it. You can probably strap it to the outside, but it's not going to fit inside.

Responded on

Definitely be used as an everyday bag, I know plenty of guys and gals who do. As for the longboard, of course.

Responded on

its made to carry snowboards and skis...so yes the longboard will fit fine, vertically and horozontaly...i hate this for school tho, theres only 3 main pockets and its considerbaly small, no space or organization

Responded on

I use it as a laptop bag when im not riding.

can someone please tell me the most effective way to carry a shovel blade in here, or demonstrate it with a picture.

"slide your avie shovel and probe into the quick-access front pocket" really?...because that pocket is really small

Responded on

Shovel head barely fits (i have a bca), handle goes on the side of the pack. As for a probe I have no idea how a probe could ever fit into that pocket.

Responded on

Voile makes some shovels with smaller blades. Perhaps one of them would work better.

Responded on

just ordered a volie telepro, fingers crossed

Responded on

Shovel in the pocket, handle on the side... My probe stores in the shovel handle...
