Description

Essential equipment for leaving the resort behind.

All your fancy backcountry tools won't do you much good without the right pack to carry them. Be prepared for whatever you face outside the resort boundaries with the Dakine Heli Pro DLX Backpack. It's equipped with plenty of specialized pockets and straps to hold your gear and an ergonomic design that won't hold you back when you're shredding down.

The main compartment has a shovel blade sleeve and room for your probe, and loops on the exterior hold your shovel handle so your rescue tools are always easy to access. An insulated hydration pocket keeps your water from freezing, and a fleece-lined goggle pocket protects spare lenses from getting scratched. If you feel like bootpacking, you have the option of vertical or horizontal snowboard carry straps, and retractable cables hold your skis if you're on two planks. A quick-draw ice axe sleeve allows quick access to your axe if you find yourself in a hairy situation, and an integrated rescue whistle on the sternum strap can help you if you really find yourself in a pinch.

Great Pack

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I have yet to use this pack but I disagree with the review below about it being a side country pack. I can fit more than enough for a full day tour. The padded back is really nice. My only complaint is that that "goggle pocket" is not big enough to fit a pair of goggles. You could still throw them in the main compartment.

Solid resort or "sidecountry" pack

First, it's ALL backcountry - what I mean by "sidecountry" is this pack is barely big enough for backcountry essentials. This is a pack for doing laps at the local day-trip-pow-stash, but definitely not a pack for a serious day-long excursion. At least if you're me.

I've been using mine for only in-bounds skiing, for which it is perfect! Puffy, water, snacks, cans of craft beer, spare goggles, music, etc. all fit in the pack with ease and I barely know it's there.

I've also used it to hike out-of-bounds at some local hills, but I don't think loading it up with emergency provisions, probe, shovel, etc. is what this was built for. OKAY, maybe if you're heli-skiing!

The only feature lacking that the bigger models have is back-access. I didn't realize how good it is until I lost it when I downgraded from the Pro II.

Finally, what kind of bottle fits in that deploy-able side-pocket? Not any water bottle I've seen. I found it works best for crushed beer cans, keeping the suds outside!

Dakine Pro DXL 20L backpack

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Quality. I am very pleased with this backpack. I would definitely recommend it. Worth the pennies. I got the red one which I wouldn't have normally purchased but so glad I did...
