picked it up for a 14day cross country road trip, took the block out and packed it full of clothes, packed the block as well with all my camera gear
fit everything i needed
14 days on the road in one bag
got home and use it around the city
ride the bus everyday to work , so any day i have my laptop(17") , skullcandys, sunglasses, lunch, skate deck, skate shoes, keys, skate tools, pens, sticky notes, gopro, nalgine bottle, coffee mug.....
it has a place for everythign and the load straps let me compress it down to a reasonable size to keep from knocking everyone else over on the bus
its a gearhead bag
if you want a bag that you can hike with , film with, travel with, and wear around town
i dont think there is another bag on the planet that comes close
dont think just buy it

This is one of the best photo bags out there, and it's amazing what you can fit. I fit a full sized prosumer video camera, and a 5d mark ii with lenses, and a 15 inch laptop in this thing... and still have room for random doodads. Also this has a lot of great strapping options so you can carry a tripod and what not.... I've had this things so loaded with gear it was hard to pick up..... and it's BOMBER... great design and construction... you won't be bummed on this purchase.

Yes, you can. You can fit it between the back panel of the bag and the camera block. It isn't easy to get the laptop out when the block is there, but it is possible.

i've carried my 17in in this before, between the back panel and inner padded lens/body bag. It isn't ideal and there is just enough wiggle room to make it work, but for short periods of time as long as you don't mind a heavy pack, yes, you can carry a laptop in this bag.

Overall, it's a nice pack. Super padded and I'm never worried about my camera's safety. Only complaints are that it's a little heavy and doesn't carry super comfortably... but it certainly isn't bad.

It is really bombproof and very useful, as the camera department can be detached, and the backpack used for any other stuff. The camera department can be hanged in your shoulder independently, which is extremely useful if you want to go downtown to take some pics.

I honestly wish I could live in a house this stylish and well built. The single BEST housing my camera has ever seen and that's saying a lot as I've gone through at least 10 different bags in the last 7 years. This thing is amazing, you'll be suprised by the weight when you get the pack. Much heavier than you think but in my opinion that's the best part about it. The camera block is very very well padded and has a hard external type frame around it. The back panel is very firm and rigid adding even more protection. I took a pretty good fall on a steep with this pack on and my camera inside, landed flat on my back with no damage to my camera or lenses. The suspension is great for being just a casual daypack type pack. A ton of pockets for anything that you could think about putting in the pack. The material is highly water resistant. Carries a tripod or shovel/poles very well. All in all the best pack I've ever used and probably the most durable.

This pack is AMAZING.
Its got plenty of pockets and I love how the photo block is removable. There's a top pocket I put all of my filters in for quick access. There's a large front pocket with 3 small dividers inside it and there's another pocket on the front made for goggles. There's two side pockets that zip up easily over 9 OZ water bottles and there's two small pockets on the waist-belt. The camera is located on a zipper at the "back" of the pack - the part closest to your back, so if you fall, its more protected. Plenty of places to put things!
The padding on the shoulder straps and back are incredible. I'm not sure what they're made of, but they feel like Neoprene. Whatever it is, its extremely comfortable and low key. There's 2 different ways to adjust the shoulder straps - from the top or bottom.
This thing is built to carry either my tripod or my snowboard. When carrying the tripod there are two small compartments that zip open reveal two extra straps for holding down my tripod (in addition to the two already visible). One at the top of the pack and one at the bottom. When its time to carry the board, those go away and I can use the two visible straps. When I'm carrying neither, the top straps can snap into each other so I can cinch down my pack and keep it compact.
I only have one complaint: The photo block didnt' come with enough dividers for me to customize it enough for me. I'm contacted Dakine to get some more, but they claim that they don't sell any extra dividers. I'm going to buy some different ones of Amazon.com soon.

This pack has everything I ever wanted in a photog bag. Plenty of space for all you gear, and then some. Pockets galore... There is also space to stash some snacks a pair off goggles and extra layer, you name it.
Dunno where the other dude was looking but there is in fact a board carry system tucked away. You just have to look for it ;)
There's also a dedicated system to carry your tripod! No more messing around with straps that are not designed to carry one.
And then there's the padding... It feels like you could tomahawk down the mountain and nothing would happen to you precious equipment. (Have not actually tried this, but it seems that way.)
All in all I'm stoked!

Does this pack carry a shovel & probe?
Gareth Loosle

There is a side pocket made for a probe.
Its not designed to carry a shovel - but there are many ways to carry one on this pack. For example, you can use the tripod cables to carry a shovel or use one of the side pockets and put it under the board strap to keep it snug against the pack.
Hope this helps

Yes there is a spot for a shovel on the side of the pack right next to the side pocket!

Iv had three (3!) diffrent versions of the backpack and everyone of them kicks ass! This backpack (as Neil Provo says) is freaking bomb proof. Iv had this backpack with me on all my trips since i can remember and it has not failed me once. At one point in norway last year i had a freaking dollytrack, skis and tripod on this badboy, no big.. For the record, when i was taking a break from the snow down in southeast asia this was my travel mate. The inner pack was my camera home witch i had around my shoulder and in the backpack itself i had my cloths. As soon as i landed in the hotel i just took out my cloths, put my camera block in and went hiking and swimming (awesome!).
What ever you buy next, go get this bag! Its insanely good..

This bag is great in terms of carrying your camera equipment... but then you also have a board and all your other gear. There is no board carry, for a snowboarding pack, this alone takes points away. Who designs a bag with no board carry when you've already got so much to take care of with your camera gear. So camera gear alone, sick, plenty of space... but when it comes to overall functionality...bummer
Gareth Loosle

There is a vertical board carrier - There are two straps on the back of the pack. The top two unbuckle from where they show in the picture and you can make them longer so they buckle together (one is male one s female). The bottom strap just stays buckled together all the time. Granted, you can't really carry a tripod and a board at the same time, but...how often will you want to carry your tripod around while boarding anyways?

Ended up swapping out for the Burton Zoom and couldn't be happier with the increased amount of space and easily accessible board carry! As pointed out by you guys, I didn't look hard enough for the board carry on this pack. Guess I assumed I shouldn't have to work to find my board carry...
