I am 5'9 and a half ish and about 155 pounds, 36 and a bit chest. I would certainly recommend the small, as it is oversize fit. The small is pretty baggy for me, but i expect i am skinnier than you

You could do a medium to fit true to size, or a large if you'd like a little extra room. My personal preference would be to size up to the large.
