Employee Gear Closet

He snowboards, he camps, and when you place an order, he runs the show.

by Backcountry.com

Derek Horejs (that’s “horesh”, which is Czech, not Spanish) has been with Backcountry.com since 2003. Since then he’s worked as a Gearhead, in receiving, returns, the outbound department, and moments ago was promoted to Shipping Supervisor. He regularly audits outgoing orders, which he says, “is awesome, because I get to know all the gear we sell and all the many beautiful shades of blue that The North Face has to offer the world.”

Derek knows Backcountry.com inside-out, and to prove that, we timed him as he took an order over the phone, picked the items from the warehouse and shipped the completed order. He accurately processed the demanding order for a spork , a sit-on-top kayak , two pink Nuptses and a BearVault in an amazing fourteen minutes and 53 seconds. Ms. Rosemary Heath, we thank you for your participation.

When he’s not ruling the warehouse scene, Derek is found (or lost) in the mountains. With 15 years of snowboarding notched on his belt, Derek rocked the throwback styles long before anyone thought of them as throwback. “That's right,” he says, “I started back when we used to get chased off the slopes at Brighton, of all places, and get beat up in the parking lot—seriously. I wore hot pink before it went out and came back into style again.” Derek rides Lib Tech boards and Flow bindings.

His other passions include mountain biking, kayaking, backpacking and consuming copious amounts of PBR while car camping. Derek spent last summer running rivers near Jackson, WY. For this edition of Gear Closet, Derek shows off some of his favorite camping gear—the goods that helped him survive a summer on the water.

Kelty Yellowstone 2 Tent: It's so cheap that I don't have to worry about damaging it. I'd rather have the heavier fiberglass poles, because I've bent aluminum poles in the backcountry, and that's no fun. With the footprint, you can make a mini version of the Sunshade. It's as simple as they come these days.

The North Face Ultra Gore-Tex XCR Trail Running Shoe: With gaiters, these shoes are awesome for backpacking. You can kick steps in snowfields and keep those little piggies warm and dry.

Marmot PreCip Jacket: It keeps the rain off. It's light and compactable. It has vents. It also doubles as a windbreaker. I love it and the PreCip hat too.
