ya a large would be perfect for him, im 6'0 190lbs and the large is a little longer than i like but it would be perfect for him, im a 34 waist too and its a good fit at the waist but if u got him an XL he wouldnt be able to keep his pants up

ya im the same as that guy im 19 about 6'0 my waist is a 32-34, the mediums were too tight so i went with the large, its a little long tho but not really a big deal
