How flexible are these things when it comes to curving my back sideways? From the way it looks it only looks like it's designed to bend forward. Would be awesome if it did both or better yet a combination of both.

It does do both. The overlapping spine panels flex freely and follow whatever movements you make. It is not curved forward at all.
