wait- figured it out. Just have to unhook the straps from the pads (any logical person with eyes can figure that one out), and pull really hard, straight out. Unless you feel the foam tearing, then just pull. I was a little timid at first, not wanting to break my new helmet, but you honestly just gotta put some effort in...
