You can definately ride a mid-wide deck, as I do from time to time. But with 12's, you need a waist width of at least 250(25cm) or you will be dragging. I have size 12's aswell and I ride a Rome Machine W with a waist width of 260. So if you do drop the wide for a mid, just watch the waist
