Even though it says this coat has insulation, is it pretty much just a shell? Or does it have good insulation?

It does have insulation but a very light insulation... only 40 grams. So, it is one of the lightest insulated pieces you can buy. Jackets go upwards of 500 Grams insulation. (just a weight setting to explain how warm a jacket can be)
