It is a shell jacket. It has 10K waterproofing, so it will keep you dry for sure and some what warm. I wouldn't just run this in 0 or negative weather but it will work great with a good layering piece like this; http://www.dogfunk.com/special-blend-dirty-jersey-shirt-long-sleeve-mens
