Awesome Binding,

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I had some trouble with these bindings last year, but I wanted to give them another try so I purchased the 2013 and have about 10 days on them (roughly 60 days including the 2012 model). I believe Union is doing amazing things in binding specific R&D and with rapid product development cycles there is bound to be quality and/or trial and error issues. I guess I am willing (at some level) to be a lab rat, especially when the Backcountry.com guarantee means I have nothing to lose.

All of that said, so far these bindings have been awesome! The Union MC Metafuse is really pushing the limits of what is possible in terms of lightweight construction--the metafuse nanometal polymer hybrid technology is definitely an experiment in extreme weight, rigidity and strength, and it seems to be paying off. When you pull them out of the box you'll be shocked at how light they really are, especially if you're coming from a binding with a heavier aluminum or plastic base. But don't let the lightweight fool you; what you can expect is a super stiff binding with precision adjustability, amazing feel under foot and instant response.

My biggest issue with these bindings is that I don't like the toe strap, it never seemed to fit my boot well and tended to move up the boot while riding. I replaced the Union toe strap with Burton Gettagrip Capstraps, which was an easy swap and made a huge difference. For some, the price may be the biggest issue, but the MC Metafuse is cost competitive with the Burton Diode and in my personal opinion, a more progressive product from a progressive company.

UPDATE: Snapped one of the carbon high backs making turns in deep Hokkaido powder yesterday. Don't know how or why, too cold, too much torque on the turns, too fragile in the weight to strength trade-off is my guess. Too bad because I really do love them. Maybe Union will get it right for 13/14?
