I love Vans, even though they are not made in the US anymore, but what is these days.
I want to love these shoes. I used them last season for bi-deck snowskating here in the Tahoe Basin.
At first they were great, a pair a smart wools and the shoes, that was it. After, a full day of riding they became water-logged. You don't really notice the weight, but you do feel the wetness and chill. Within 3 weeks, the wrapping started to peel back and was collecting bits of snow and ice.
I stuck it out for the rest of the season, but switched to my gore-tex running shoes for slushy spring conditions, which completely waterproof, but shitty because I prefer the flat sole skater shoe feel.
As for the grip, it proved to hold up well. The reverse waffle is great on the neoprene type grip tape I use on my snowskate.
I'm giving them 3 stars because I can give Vans any less. But I would not recommend these to anyone.
