Used this helmet for months of Montana powdered glades. Great adjustable fit allows for balaclava or not. Toasty warm with vents closed. With them open I don't even feel like I've a helmet on. Took some tough head shots with no damage to nut or shell. Perfect fit, no gap, with Smith and Uvex goggles. Go for it!
Description: This helmet is awesome. It is lightweight and has vents that open up to cool you off and close up to keep you warm on the bitter days. It looks really good with the Smith Phenom goggles or the new I/O
goggles from Smith.
Well, I can't really say that. Most helmet companies are doing a great job of this, but this Variant helmet is a great overall entry into the industry. This helmet is very light and very versatile because of its venting system. The ability to partially open vents really does help in this case. The fit is pretty much dead even to what Smith is saying and the music ear pads that can be put in as an after market piece work very well. Downsides? Well, if it gets too warm, that ventilation system won't help anymore and it will fit with most goggles except some Oakley frames. Overall, a great helmet that no one will be ashamed to get noticed in.
Great fit and the best venting I've had in a helmet. I sweat tons but the Variant's ample venting keeps my head dry and my goggles fog free!!

This is my first helmet and I have no complaints. Keeps the noggin fully protected and doesn't feel like I'm wearing a helmet. My Smith gogs fit perfectly over them.
Purchased for my very particular minded son. He loves the fact that the black is matte not shiny, has a great shape with not too flashy stripes. If he has to wear a helmet, this one makes it less of a hardship.
I wear prescription glasses under my Smith Goggles. The variant helment works perfectly, fits great and is warm.
So nice to have a helment that coordinates with the goggles thanks.

Just got back from Austria, where this helmet took everything i could throw at it, and havin only been boarding for 6 months, that was quite a bit. I used Smith Phenom goggles, and gotta say, never once experienced any fogging. The vents were always open. never got cold enough to close 'em. One tip though, i pulled one of the ear protectors out of it's housing, which trust me was stuck pretty fast. but it don't fit back in as snug now:s...recommend you leave 'em be. All in all though, this is my second lid 'n it looks sweeter than most and comfy too!! NICE!
Very nice helmet. Works great in varying conditions due to excellent venting. Lower profile avoids the bubble-head look of some helmets. Only bad things are minimal padding on inside and a little heavier than my previous helmet: Giro 9.
Overall I love it.

Do headhunters pass on you? Smith built this for the weird headed too! 11-12-08
Got a shrunken head? then this is the helmet for you! I have a hard time finding helmets, hats, and even beanies that look good on me. My face is kind of long oval-shaped and I have a small head circumference, about 53 cm. The HFS system solved that dilemma right away. Tried on my size, adjusted the HFS in the back and my head finally knew what it was like to cuddle. I loved it. Extremely lightweight, comfortable padding, cool looking, and they fit perfectly with my POC lobe goggles! A little more expensive than most, but worth it. get last years model on sale if you can.
Love the matte look and the outer vent adjustment. Used to more padding but the adjustable sizing does well. Used it at the end of the season so might need a cap liner for the really cold temps to feel warmer. Overall, very pleased!
I bought this helmet after ~10 years in a Red that needed to be retired. It fits well compared to others I've tried, (I generally lean toward the fit of Giros), it's comfy. I like the ear pieces and can hear well. Only gripes are it's going to scuff very easily (white, but I knew that...) and I get a bit of the gaper gap feeling with my Prodigys. No, you can't see the gap, but there is some definite air flow due to the way they set up the venting to keep goggs from fogging. Overall, fantastic helmet!
Spent three days straight in this helmet and have no complaints. Kept me warm when I needed it, and I opened the vents when I needed to cool off. Very comfortable and lightweight, it does not even feel like you are wearing a helmet at all. Great helmet, I highly recommend it!!
This is a fine helmet. comfortable, functional, easy to use. the fit adjustment is great when adding insulation to the head and the venting is great as well. would purchase again and recommend this product.
Sm = too small; Med = too big. I'm not goldilocks, but this helmet's fit isn't remotely as good as the fit of a Giro helmet (which has the back-of-head adjustable feature). Too bad because I usually really like other smith products.
