Great helmet for kids!

We were torn between this helmet and the GIRO that was fully fleeced inside for warmth. By the time I bought this one for $65 and a $20 hat, I could have bought the fully lined GIRO 2009. New 09 GIRO was $100 so I only saved about $15. However my 11 year old daughter loved this one and now she can mix and match different hats to go under it. Overall great helmet - comfortable, great quality.

Will this fit with my EG2's?
And if so, on a scale of 1 to perfect, how 10?
Not compatible with Smith Phenom goggles.

I have a Giro G9 and was looking for a simpler, lighter, lower profile helmet. The Shiv meets all of those characteristics, but the detachable magnetic goggle retainer is not compatible with Smith Phenom or any goggles that hook together in the middle with a plastic latch mechanism. The Mag Clip works by threading the goggle strap through the clip, so it stays on your goggles, but since the helmet is only magnetic in the back part of the middle, the part that clips my goggles straps together gets in the way. If you wear your goggles inside your helmet (or have plenty of strap to work with) this won't be an issue, but without the Mag Clip your goggle straps will slide down to your neck since the back of the helmet is smooth and there's nothing else to hold it in place. Otherwise it'd be a great helmet, but I couldn't use it.

Pros: Unbelievably light. Can baerly tell it's on when it's on. Plenty of removable pads inside that cover air holes and provide room for hats/gogs etc. Magnetic goggle clip is pretty cool as well. Overall I liked the look well enough, but I find that the helmets with a bit of shaping/brim on the front tend to look less bulky. This one ends a bit high on my head so doesn't look as nice as some of the others I've tried. Since they will all give enough protection, for me it comes down to which helmet makes me look the least like The Great Gazoo (that's a bobble head look for you kids out there), and this one was not it for me. Miuns that one tiny personal thing, it's a kickass helmet though.

This Helmet is Pretty Awesome. The Sizing is Correct. My head is 57 Centimeters. And the Medium Fits Perfect!
It's super lightweight, the vents can be opened or plugged with the included foam pieces. The padding is just right, and the ear pads are comfy! I have a Bern Brentwood and R.E.D. Synth and I choose this helmet over both of those!
Great Buy

This helmet is reasonable priced, looks great and fits well- the optional inserts can help you customize it for your large or small noggin, or the addition of a hat. I've considered wearing this for rollerblading in the spring, its that comfortable. And then my friends talked sense into me since we're not doing any jumps on blades anytime soon.
loving this one

This helmet is really light and easy to wear, and I love the magnetic goggle clip. I always wear it with a beanie underneath, and sometimes I wear the goggles under and sometimes over--it's nice to have the option in the same helmet with no fuss.

does anyone know how to remove the ear flaps?

They should just pop right out. They usually have a two plastic fins that clip into the helmet. You should be able to just pop them out.

They Slide out. You just have to yank them a little.. But the helmet feels wierd without them.

You just have to tug on them a bit! I actually prefer the helmet without them, but with a beanie underneath instead, plus it means you can use decent headphones too.

....the goggles kept slipping off the back and slapping me in the back of the neck. maybe it's something i'm doing because i haven't read anybody else having a trouble with it. what it is, the back helmet retainer actually has a very stong magnet, as does the helmet, so they stick together. i think i'm pulling hard enough so that it's slipping off and popping me in the back of the neck. the helmet itself feels good, though, and the vents have removable plugs you pull from the inside. it's lower profile than the protech assault, but not super low. probably as low as a helmet can be and still retain some cushion between your head and a tree. a 4 because of the goggle thing, but the rest of it is great. oh...what looks like weaving on the inner lining is a printed pattern on the cushion inserts.

Versatile Style plus Giro Safety

I picked up the Giro Shiv (Matte Black) at the beginning of the season because I wanted a lighter more "park" style helmet to compliment my G10 MX. Due to my great experience with the G10 I knew Giro would be the best choice for my second helmet and chose the new Shiv over the Encore 2 due to its slightly better safety, removable goggle clip and cooler design. The Shiv is a very versatile helmet, it has removable pads in different thicknesses to customize the fit and when removed there is no velcro on the inside of the helmet itself so if you like rocking a beanie underneath there is no velcro to rip it to shreds. The removable pads also worked great for wearing my goggles (Oakley Crowbars) underneath the helmet without them feeling uncomfortable, I liked having the earpads popped out for a little ventilation when I wore my beanie plus goggles underneath. On cold days there are little pads that block the vents to keep out the wind and even without a hat on the earpads are super warm, comfy and you can hear people talk! As a steezy newschool skier I loved the style of the helmet which enabled me to cover it with my collection of stickers while still ensuring me that if I knuckle the next jump or fall off a rail or just land on my head from some ice I have the safety of Giro backing me up. Overall a great product, as expected nothing but the best from Giro.

If you are even considering snowmobiling, I would look for a snowmobiling helmet. Snowboard helmets are meant to protect in the piste and park, not going 80+ in a motorized vehicle. Completly different standards apply.
Killer Choice

I can't agree more that this helmet is for the guy looking for the low profile look. Works well with the pads in or with no pads and a hat. It's also super light and versatile. The magnetic goggle clip was a great idea. My Scott Motive's fit the helmet great as well.
so sick

IF your looking for a low profile skate style helmet, it doesnt get better than this, you can wear and beanie and goggle under the helmet if you take out the pads so its so sick. Really dosnt make you look like a bobble head like other helmets.
