Description

Keep a low profile and lay down some solid sessions.

With riders like Antti Autti, Andy Finch, and Gretchen Bleiler wearing the Giro Shiv Helmet, you know this skate-influenced brain bucket will protect your skull without making you look like an egg-headed tool. The interior sub-liner allows you to adjust the padding or remove it completely to make room for a beanie. Run your goggles on the inside for an even lower profile look.
  • In-mold shell construction reduces weight and overall bulk by fusing the outer shell with the impact-absorbing foam liner
  • Super Cool vents pull fresh air in and push heat out for better temperature regulation
  • Removable vent plugs
  • Removable ear pads
  • Compatible with TuneUps systems

Great Helmet

I decided to try something new this year and I found a good deal on a Giro Shiv on SAC so I decided to pick it up. After an entire season I am a big fan of this helmet. I've never been a stickler about the vents really, I pulled out the "vent plugs" and they stayed out all year. I also pulled out all of the padding and earpads and wore a beanie underneath instead. Even though some say its bulky, I enjoyed the big fuzzy chinstrap. Really comfortable and no rubbing/irritation to speak of, although it does ice over pretty well on cold/blizzardy days, in which case I'm always wearing an artic yowie so its not a big deal. All in all, I haven't had any problems with this helmet and it has held up really well. I like the way it fits, and it doesn't stick up too high or give the dreaded bobblehead look (in my opinion). I've accompanied this review with a corny photo to show the fit of the helmet with smith I/O goggles.

Bulky

I'm sure this helmet would suffice if you don't mind the look, but I was looking for a low profile helmet and this wasnt it.

Giro Shivvv

I love the yellow color of this helmet. I do have a few complaints, though. One. The vents are plugged by small inserts that have to be removed or replaced to open/close the vents. So then you have a couple small pieces in your pockets that could easily be lost and to put them back in you'd have to take off your helmet and pop the puzzle pieces back in instead of simply sliding them open/closed like other helmets. Two. I have Smith IO/S goggles, which don't fit perfectly with the Giro Shiv either. I know you can buy Giro goggles which are supposed to have a perfect fit with their helmets, but I love my IO/S's. I've been wearing a headband or a beanie under the helmet, so I can't feel wind or cold coming in a goggle gap, but they just don't fit right. Three. The chin strap is also super bulky, which is comfortable but looks kind of funny. That being said, I still love that it's yellow so I continue to wear it with my yellow pants.

This is a universal helmet, not gender specific.

No head shivs, all good

Helmets... hate to wear'em, hate to go out without them.

I've worn a lid since 98 when I got a Burton RED one for free. I hate them. I WISH I could go back to a beannie. But honestly... it's not worth it. I've hit my head more than a few times, usually doing stupid stuff... little 180 over a dirt patch and catching an edge, etc.

So the Shiv. This is my second and it's as great as the first. Light, customizable pads and it doesn't get too hot, even with the pads inserted. These new Shivs have a more traditional goggle clip, versus the older magnetic ones that were cool, but kinda weirded me out (and I was always afraid that I'd leave that clip behind if I switched goggles). You don't really know the helmet is there after a while.

I bought the white one, which has a little pattern to it, but mellow. I dig it. The other colors look solid too.

If you hate helmets, consider this one.

Light weight and awesome

This is an awesome helmet, I got it in grey and really like it, it looks just like it does in the picture. It fits really well, it comes with extra padding you can velcro in in the places where you want it which is really nice. It has fuzzy ears to keep them nice and warm! I have smith phenoms and smith fuse goggles, the fuse fit perfectly with the helmet, the phenoms don't fit perfectly but pretty dang close

I know Giro has removable earpads on most of their helmets. Is this one of them?
And if so, how?

Responded on

wait- figured it out.
Just have to unhook the straps from the pads (any logical person with eyes can figure that one out), and pull really hard, straight out. Unless you feel the foam tearing, then just pull. I was a little timid at first, not wanting to break my new helmet, but you honestly just gotta put some effort in...

Love.

Every helmet I've had before this one (Giro bad Lieutenant and Bern Must) has been able to shift forward and back a bit on my head and it drove me crazy because no matter what I did I never felt like my helmet fit quite right and then this one popped up on Brociety this fall in the audio version. I thought what the heck, it looks good and if I don't like this any better I'll send it back so I pulled the trigger. For me, a person who apparently has a shortish head front to back, this helmet fits perfect. Super happy with it. Only thing is the earpads (I dunno about the regular ones, but the audio ones) don't seem to pop out. That's my one single quibble though.

Solid fit, nice and simple

Fits my head whether I have a beanie on underneath or not (just tighten the chinstrap a bit), although it can feel a bit strange without the extra cushion of a hat. Sometimes I don't even notice when I ding my head on the door of my hatchback getting my ski stuff out. And never have I gotten too warm in it.

Good to go

I returned a Smith Holt helmet for this one cause I liked the smaller profile this helmet provided. It was warm but not too warm and had a good snug fit. Highly recommended.

Perfect!

We bought this helmet for our 9-year old daughter and followed the sizing instructions. It is a perfect fit and she loves it. We also did not see another helmet like it with the crazy colors on the slopes. Great find.
