Fly high.

The lesser-known heroes of WWII were a group of Soviet women pilots who flew by night over Germany. They flew in less-than-ideal aircraft and, by the end of the war, each flew an average of 1,000 missions, most of them successful. So successful, in fact, that their target enemy begun calling them the Night Witches. The Homeschool Night Witch Pullover Shell, very much like its namesake, is capable of defeating odds (in this case, nasty weather like the fierce precipitation of the Pacific Northwest) in order to accomplish its goal (to have fun while snowboarding, of course).

Homeschool is doing it right!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

When I first saw this jacket, and saw the Breathability rating. I thought no way a 15k waterproofing, and 25k breathability rating for $150 bucks... I couldnt believe it! So, I did a little bit of research on this new little PNW company made by hardcore boarders that ride the same Northwest slopes I do! They build all of their jacket to withhold through all of the PNW conditions that other jacket usually dont.

Now, the jacket itself is bombproof. Great top of the line material, and breathable warm 3.5 layer technology. I rep a ninja suit, and a packable vest under a size medium jacket, and have never had a warmer set up in my life. I'll be honest this was my first ever pull over snowboarding jacket. It was my first jacket with out a powder skirt so I wasn't certain that I would like this jacket. But, those uncertainties proved to be no problem at all! The fit of this jacket is perfect. Im 5'9 and a Medium fits me with a little extra baggage for layers under.

All in all this jacket is the best tech. jacket I've ever owned and I recomend Homeschool to all of my freinds and everyone reading this. Don't be hesitant just buy this jacket or any jacket that suits you threw Homeschool. I will never buy another jacket or pair of pants that arnt from homeschool!

Great shell

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is a great shell. Fits great to size.
Slightly more brown in person, and color varies lots under artificial light compared to the sun, but the color is best in the sun. (Bronze)
No powder skirt like stated.
This is an incredible jacket at this price.
I wish the best for Homeschool because they are making quality gear.

Bomb Proof

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I would definitely recommend this shell to anyone who is looking for a bomb proof outerlayer. The Cocona/Xcelerator technology is awesome. I'm usually skeptical of "new" fabrics that claim to be more breathable than anything else on the market, but this stuff works like a charm. With a baselayer and a fleece vest, this thing is extremely warm without all the bulkiness of layer upon layer.

Already, I've put this through 2 majorly wet storms in Tahoe, and I've got to say, It's definitely held up. The fully welded seams will take a lifetime of beatings and the breathability of this thing is out out of this world. I'm usually pretty sweaty after a few runs in either warm spring conditions or super wet storms, but not with this jacket. The wicking ability of this fabric is superb.

Although this is marketed as a "Snowboarder Specific" company, I like the look for skiing as well (no discrimination here). The kangaroo pocket is great as well. It allows me to access my major items (gloves, water bottles, nicknacks of all sorts) easily and without hindrance. Also, the pass holder in the hem area as well as the media pocket are well placed and extremely useful. I will say that the pullover style had me wondering at first, but eliminates a lot of issues with wet/leaky zippers.

Once again, I would definitely recommend this to all skiers and snowboarders looking for a solid and weatherproof jacket.

UPDATE: 2/19/2013 -
I love this jacket, unfortunately, the main zipper has broken off completely and cannot be repaired by me. The mechanism that keeps the zipper from slipping down during use is a semi complex system including a spring and lever and is beyond my skills to fix or replace. Fortunately, the Backcountry customer service is impeccable and set up the return flawlessly and without issue. The only downside is now there are no replacements in my size.... still can't complain about anything else on this jacket.
Please, post if anyone else has had this issue.

The kangaroo pocket is side entry that goes all the way thru in front? So you can clasp your hands together in front correct ?

Responded on

Yes, think of a pullover hoodie, except stormproof.

Hi David,
I used mine for the first time a few weeks back and the zip broke also. Well the zip was mine but the pulley (metal Homeschool logo) broke clean off making it hard to pull the zip down. Eventually got it off and managed to use a cable tie to get me through the rest of my holiday, frustrating though.

false ad details

No powder skirt,or hand/wrist gators. I bought it because it said it did. No mesh in the pit zips either.which could be good, but mostly bad for riding pow.nice material though.

dont get this jacket if you are planning to snowboard with it, cause there is no powder skirt. i also got the bronze color and it turned out to be way darker in person than in the picture, almost brown looking, so dont expect the "gold" look like did. Also i agree with the lack of features, there is a big kangaroo pocket but thats about it other than a chest pocket for an ipod. also there is no lining in the arm vents, just a big gap....weird design, probably going to return it.

How much does this shell weigh? Thanks.

I haven't actually weighed it, but I'd place it in the "Mid Weight" Category. Not super lightweight but by no means a really heavy jacket. I wear a baselayer and a vest/fleece underneath and it keeps me nice and toasty without too much bulk.

I am buying this jacket based on the fact that a guy with my name has reviewed it for me. It must be a sign from god...

I have the pants and love them so that helped too.

Thanks Dave

lack of features

I was stoked to find some new gear made with high quality materials that was not the same burton ak that everyone else has. While the fabric of this jacket seems very durable and techy, i have no doubts as to its waterproof and breathability. I am dissapointed however that this jacket has no powder skirt, even though the description says it does. there are also no wrist gaiters. the underarm vents have no mesh lining. I'm 6'1" average size and the large fit pretty well, but was a bit tight in the shoulders/chest. you could definately fit 1-2 technical (tight) layers underneath with decent range of motion but if you like your stuff baggy then size up.

I had spent a bit of time looking through the homeschool site and thought that all of their stuff had jacket/pant interface tech on them, but apparently I picked the 1 item out of 7 that doesnt have it. I also got the skweetis pants which are supposed to have the jacket/pant interface but all i see is normal belt loops no snaps like on my old special blend.

The hood fits over my helmet (smith variant) but its very snug and causes the whole jacket to "ride up" a bit, further highlighting the need for a powder skirt or jacket/pant connection. I really like the cuffs and the media pocket but no pow skirt or vent mesh make this too easy to get wet from snow no matter how quickly you shed body moisture.

I will end up returning both items, but will still be watching out for new designs as they have some things going for them.

Okay updated review after use. This fabric is amazing for durability, the blue shows dirt very easily. My helmet is size xl smith variant and the hood is just not big enough. this makes the whole jacket ride up. the "wind hater" panels on the hood become blinders that cover half my goggles because the whole jacket is pulled up. the sleeves seemed long enough but they ride up easily so i wish they were longer. Maybe the Xl will be longer waist, sleeves, and bigger hood without being hugely oversized in the chest.

Responded on

Hey man sorry this one didn't fit over your helmet. it does fit a lot of them out there. This piece never had a powder skirt so I'm not sure if DF made an error calling it out. It's a pretty stripped down piece. Kinda like work wear for snowboarding. Some people don't miss the powder skirt some do. Thanks for the review.

for those who ride in any weather

I got this jacket in the fall and I am in love. The pullover design is awesome and the kangaroo pocket in front is huge so you can stash anything in it. Very heavy duty zippers on all pockets is also a nice feature. The waterproofing on this jacket is something else, I live at the base of Mt. Hood in Oregon which is basically the rain forest so this jacket fits my needs perfectly. A couple weeks ago it was pouring down rain at my local resort, the snow was still good and fast so I went out in the Night witch and spent 5 hours cruisin' with a huge smile on my face because I was still dry while all my friends were soaked. I would have to say this jacket breathes better than any Gore-Tex jacket I have ever owned, Cocona Tech could possibly be magic. I would recommend this jacket to everyone who likes to stay dry and snowboard in any weather. Good work Homeschool snowboarding!

Favorite Jacket to snowboard in

I absolutely love the pullover design and the kangaroo pocket. This jacket hands-down is my favorite jacket to snowboard in. I put in well over a hundred days last season, 80% of the time I wore the night witch. Comfortable, with loose enough fit to lay down some serious turns. I would call it state of the art shred wear technology.
