They are NOT insulated. They have a mesh lining and definitely need to wear a baselayer or thermals underneath in cold weather. I wore a single layer of Under Armor Cold Gear a few weeks back in Okemo, VT and it was single digit temps at the base and negative at the peak.
I disagree with Bristol, they are plenty waterproof for what you pay for. They aren't Goretex or anything, but you aren't paying for goretex. I've worn them for about 10 days of riding so far and I've stayed dry.

I'm 5'11" and weigh 235lbs and I got the Redical in XL. The waist is a bit big, I have to wear a belt to keep them from being SUPER baggy. They are Burton's SIG fit so they are supposed to be a bit baggy, but I think it's too much, maybe it's because I'm not a 16 yr old kid.
Unless you like a baggy and very loose fit, you'll probably be ok with the L.
