A substantial layer of protection.
Your twig and berries won't flop around and your tailbone or hips won't lose the battle with the ground or a hard rail if you rock the RED Base Layer Short. Because you choose to put your bag of bones at risk with lap after lap in the park RED ensures you get up and get back on that rail, box, or kicker by minimizing bruising to those bones that are most as risk.

Do you wear these UNDER long pants? Probably a pretty obvious 'yes', but just wanted to make sure
That is correct, they are worn under your pants.
May look skimpy
This may look skimpy at first. But having something there to cushion the fall is better than nothing, esp when you land hard on your ass. Definitely saved me from needing to go to the massage therapist more than once.
These Red Base Layer Shorts didn't have much protection where you really need them for snowboarding. This was my first ever snowboarding experience, which means I had a few falls. These Shorts didn't have much protection under the butt or the tailbone area, which is usually where you'd fall when snowboarding. But had an overload of padding on the thigh area...didn't make much sense being Burton owns Red now. I don't recommend these for snowboard newbies.
