When Rome built the Folsom Snowboard Boot, it pulled out all the stops. It broke the mold. It threw out the rule book, and it barred absolutely no holds. The Folsom is Rome's ultra-stiff big mountain/freeride boot designed for experienced riders who put power into their turns and need instant response and absolute precision with every miniscule twitch of their feet. If you aren't sure whether you can handle a boot this stiff, then you can't.
The Folsom's full synthetic leather shell tosses moisture like a monkey tosses poo. Closure duties are handle by a Triple-Zone, Dual-BOA setup that lets you quickly and easily customize your fit between three separate zones every time you slide your foot into the boot. The three-part TrackedOut sole incorporates loads of EVA foam that not only absorbs shock but keeps the boot's weight down. Anti-shock gel pads under the heels bear the brunt of hard, flat landings so your feet don't have to. Finally, but most importantly, the Folsom uses Rome's Elite F.I.T. liner, which is exclusive to the Folsom. The Elite liner has a full EVA sole, which fits better with the Folsom's shell than a conventional liner sole. It also absorbs shock and makes it possible to use your Elite liner as actual footwear while your Folsoms dry out. An expanded, elastic toe zone conforms to a greater variety of foot shapes than a conventional liner. Rome's Hexgrip Heel Hold uses a silicone grip gel to keep your heel locked in place while you ride. At the cuff, Rome incorporated a 270-degree soft skate cuff with memory foam to fit your foot perfectly. Finally, the tongue uses the NKS Shield, an integrated EVA pad that provides a smooth, long-lasting curve at the ankle and cushioning that won't pack out.

firm freeride charger
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
stiffies? yes! at least the first day out on them. i was lucky enough to find them on sale for a hundo off retail so i figured why not try em out. the stiffness took a little getting used to, but definitely worth keeping instead of returning (if you're ready for such a boot). this is the first boot i've ever tried with this boa system. not sold on it and would prefer a lace up next boot i purchase. call me old school, but i have to continually tighten each ratchet thing as the day progresses. i might add, this is easy to do so it's not that big of a deal. this boot is the last boot i ride before going to a burton driver, but wanted to try something outside of the box other than burton. from there, it's full on hardboots which i'm not sure i'd like to be stuck on all day. i've had about five days on them at the end of the season during variable spring conditions. typical bulletproof ice coast to mashed potatoes. the boot rode like a straight up and down freecarver the first day out. i thought, shit, i can't tweak out a sweet mute grab or method with these? once i got used to them i was able to find enough maneuverability in the boot to really freeride. i'm not interested in the park so much anymore, but still jib around while fast charging down the hill. the faster the better. the boot handles nicely through "oh shit" rutted chatter just fine. sole has a nice cushion for no worry landings. toe box is not as roomy as the burton boots i've ridden in the past, but just barely enough that i'm ok with it. one major gripe with the boot is the dinky little liner lace lock mechanism. what a pain in the ass it is to loosen this thing at the end of the day! keep your fingernails handy for these. definitely something worth changing for next year on this boot SDS. all and all they're solid boots. they're more of a sixty day boot, not one hundred... for hard charging kill the mountain all day, every day type rider. 100 days sounds better for marketing though. point it.
STIFF enough 2 LOCK your heels! 2 much??

Full disclosure, I wore these twice, in-doors, and had to return them, but here's what I learned:
1. These boots are stiff. Like hard-to-get-your-feet-in-and-out-of-the-inner-boot stiff. I'm sure they'd break in a bit over time, but these are definitely almost exclusively for some hard charging, or long pow lines. And because of the stiffness...
2. The inner boot REALLY locks your heel down, which is great. If you're wearing the proper size, the inner boot is form fitting and snug enough that you still couldn't get your foot out of there if the boot was all laced up and saaaaay... on fire. And that leads me to saying...
3. The inner boot was SO SNUG that it caused a really intense pressure point across the top of both feet (even when "unlaced!", and my feet went numb after about 10 minutes. And, yes, I was wearing the proper size.
I believe they made the ankle and "top of the foot" of the inner REALLY SNUG to eliminate heel lift, BUT with the boot being so stiff, if you're not an absolute PERFECT fit, it's probably going to be too restrictive. But if it is a PERFECT fit, you may have just found your perfect boot. Only one way to find out...
So with all that being said, the inner is heat moldable, and would certainly soften and compress over time. But my last pair of boots fit from moment one, and the Folsoms aren't my only option. Thus, they're going back.
And from the limited amount of time I spent with them, I'd say construction quality is up there with comparably-priced higher-mid-range boots.
I didn't feel they compared to top end boots from say Burton, or Ride, but you only really know that for sure after 20 days in a boot.
Love these boots, but had some issues.

I'm going to start off by say I love these boots. I have the boa system and the liner is great. I'm a big fan of Rome as a company as well. That being said when the boots first arrived the boa system was broken. The metal cable was fouled in the boa tightener and was nearly impossible to used. But I contacted Rome and they sent out replacement parts immediately. They even offered to pay for the shipping to return it both ways :) so that they could repair it. I ended up replacing the broken lace myself, since I didn't feel like waiting for them to fix it.
The boots are very stiff, and I'm not saying that as a bad thing. You can feel any mistake you make when your boarding and you can feel all the great carves you are throwing down. It offers you great control over your board. Not a good park boot, but I think that goes without saying. Very comfortable boot, and they fit true to size, I'm a 10.5 in street shoes and fit a 10.5 in these.
