Description

A solution to obese ski transport.

Pick up your friends or family and secure up to six pairs of fat skis or 4 snowboards in the Yakima FatCat 6 w/Locks. Designed to handle today’s obese skis, the FatCat 6 uses push-button operation to minimize your loading time and maximum riding time. Yakima’s unique hinge system keeps your rack compact and low while aerodynamic nesting arms reduce drag to save you some gas money on the way to the resort. An integrated binding lift allows clearance for taller ski bindings with almost no effort involved and the universal mounting hardware fits round and square Yakima crossbars. Most factory crossbars are also compatible without any extra accessories.

When I fully load my Yakima fat cat 6 with four snowboards it won't close all the way or lock. Is that normal? Also how well does it hold up against driving in high winds?

Responded on

I had the same issue so I asked the guys at the shop I got it from. They said that using one of the other clicks will not do any harm, so if you can only close it to the second click and lock it that's fine and you're equipment won't move. The hinge on the opposite end puts the force on the equipment so the lock part doesn't need to be all the way down. Which makes sense as to why there are three click points... cause Yakima realized sizes would vary. I drive in high winds through Colorado and have no issues. I really love them!

Awesome!

I've got clips and the extentions to use this with both our Honda Civic 2004 coupe and Subaru Legacy 2007 sedan. I have fit 3 snowboards on the rack for long trips, and the most i've ever thrown up there was 2 snowboards and 2 skis. The Civic could barely move with 4 riders/skiers inside and all our gear. But this rack helps move those big bulky skis and boards around if you've only got a car to work with.

Also, the only reason I wasn't able to fit 4 snowboard onto the rack is because the boards on the bottom, when flipped upside down, the bindings get in the way. For my cars I don't have enough clearance between the rack and my roof. Solution...take off the bindings! Never had a need though.

Overall, awesome product, high quality. Drove my car from New Hampshire to Washington with my board up in the rack. No problems. Has held up over many seasons. And the locks definitely give you comfort when you've gotta step inside the gas station for a snack.

Best Racks!

If you are like me and my friends and are always piling 4-6 in your whip to go up to the hill for the day chances are you've run out of room on your rack. Not with these guys, fits 5 pairs of pow skis, 4 snowboards, just shy of 6 if memory serves me, or 6 pairs of all mountain/park ski's. Easy to use and mount, very low profile, all around a great product.

By far the coolest ski rack made

First off this ski rack is beautiful. It is low profile and has smooth edges. The rack comes with all the hardware you need to install to a factory rack or round/square bars. Locks are also included. The button to open and close is easy to use even with big mittens. This rack is also over sized to fit wider skis. Most of the ski racks out there can barely hold 4 pairs of skis when they say it carries 6. Skis are getting wider so they are having to make wider ski racks. If you are looking for the best ski rack on the market then look no further.

my son loves to snowboard and asked for racks for christmas. he has a 2000 jetta and I have no clue what to buy. Any suggestions?

Responded on

The Powderhound, Big Powderhound, or the FatCat 4 seem like they would work. I'd suggest going to the Yakima website and clicking on the top 'Fit My Car' link and going through the questions. I'm sure your son will like any of the ones suggested!

Responded on

If he doesnt have bars on the roof you are going to have to buy those as well. Like Jeff said, the Yakima website would be your best bet. Lucky son!

I just installed my new Yakima FatCat 6. Without skis in it, it locks. When I put skis in it, it won't lock. Why>

Responded on

Okay so what you need to do is either grind some plastic inside the locking mechanism or you can do it the easy way....with a screw driver. Just put it between the bottom part of the rack and the black plastic part below the red lever (Not between the lock and lever but between the base and the arm). Gently twist the screw driver while locking the rack.

See picture for further detail of where the screwdriver goes.

Yakima - FatCat 6

I can fit 4 snowboards and a pair of skis on this rack at once, fill up my car with five people and head to the mountain with no worries of my snowboard and the rest of my friends equipment flying off my car like my prior rack that I bought. This rack is awesome, good purchase if you have your car filled frequently with friends.

Posted this over on the fairings page, but figure it's relevant here too. Everything works great, low noise, and it all looks purrty nice.

Pretty Cool.

The main feature I appreciated about this product was how it works on all types of OEM crossbars. I installed this on OEM bars on a Honda CR-V in fifteen minutes with an extra pair of hands. Elliptical crossbars... I was happy with the road noise... unnoticeable. The locks are moody. You have to jiggle the key a bunch to manipulate it, but that is nothing new for these types of racks. I fit two 166-167 boards with bindings. I tried to over-under stack them and found I would have to remove the bindings on the lower board. I was a bit peeved my new Nidecker board got some rubs and scratches from where the clamps squeezed on the board. I would recommend if you are OCD about board damage, put a rag across the top to protect your baby. I like how the red latch draws attention to the locks. I hope it is a deterrent. Perhaps crooks will just break a window to get something instead?

If you grab yourself a spray bottle of Graphite lock lubricant, the locks never freeze up and operate very smoothly. Also, the rack does not have to be closed all the way down to the last "click" to hold your skis well and secure. I try to keep the top beam parallel to the bottom beam, and that works well without undue stress on the locking mechanism (makes it easier to unlock too).

I have a Nissan Xterra, will this rack mount fine on my SUV or do I have to buy an additional attachment?

Responded on

Depends on the crossbars that you have. If you DO have cross bars, the jaws on the Yakima FatCat should go around them just fine- they're designed to fit round and oval shape bars just fine... I believe they will go over square ones too (if you happen to be a thule fan...).

Responded on

I have an 07 Xterra and Yakima makes their racks to fit perfectly on the factory cross bars. Time to put mine back on.

The description says it holds 4 snowboards, but the specs say it only holds 2. Anyone know which one is right? Thanks!

Responded on

The rack can hold 4 snowboards if you put two side by side facing down and two directly on top facing up. Make sure that you have the clearance for the bindings facing down so they don't hit the roof. You can also take off the bindings for more room.

Does this rack actually fit 4 snowboards...

Does this rack actually fit 4 snowboards comfortably? I ask because as an instructor I will definitely have lots of gear to transport and want to make sure that the rack can support at least 4 boards.

Responded on

Absolutely! You should have no problem carrying 4 snowboards with this product. It comes with the ability to raise the carrier up so as to allow room for the bindings and keep them from hitting the roof of the car. The way it works is by stacking two snowboards back to back, doing the same thing for another set, and setting the set of two next to each other. There is plenty of room to lock down two snowboards side to side and thus sets of two snowboards side to side.
