Description

There are no friends on a powder day—after you unload the Powderhound.

When the Pacific throws a giant snowball of a storm your way, pile your friends in your car and load your weapons of choice onto the roof-mounted Yakima Powderhoud w/ Locks. The Powderhound fits round, square, and most factory crossbars and holds 4 pairs of skis or 2 snowboards. One-touch buttons have integrated SKS locks so you can lock your gear in the parking lot and sneak into a hot tub downtown. The Powderhorn’s soft rubber won’t scratch your boards and is designed with enough clearance to fit any binding.

Awesome! Great product

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Bought these for my Subaru Baja, and they work perfectly for what I need! Pretty easy to install, and love the locks on the racks too!

Initial impressions: Easy and functional

Initial impressions: Easy and functional, smaller than expected. They were very easy to install on my 2002 Grand Cherokee with square Thule crossbars and I had no problem using the Yakima parts that came with the rack to install it. I can fit one pair of skis and a snowboard, although it is tight, and two pairs of skis with room to spare. Overall I am happy with the racks and they are much easier to use then having to hassle with my seats to put them in my car.

Great rack for the price

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I bought these to mount along side of my other Yakima rack on a Tahoe. I like this rack because of the swing arm bracket that allows you to mount it a little higher than the other rack. I can fit three pairs of fatty skis in this rack or 2 snow boards. So with the combination of the other rack I can carry enough skis/boards as I have seats.
Not the most durable design but for the price I wont complain

Great little rack for 1-2 sets

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

So this works perfect for 1 pair of powder skis, 1 snowboard or 2 pairs of thin park skis. Leaves me wanting more room, but I guess if you are a solo artist this would work just fine!

Bought as a gift

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift, but have feedback to share

I bought this ski rack as a gift but have seen it on the rack and it looks like it's going to work just fine.

Decent Rack

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This rack was significantly more difficult to install than the Thule rack that I have on my other car. That being said, it was not too tough (took me about 45mins and I am NOT great at this type of work). Once installed, it does work well.

Yakima is the easiest system to install for any of their products, and I have used Thule, Proracks, Whispbar (before yakima), Kuat, Rockymount, so on and so forth. I have to say this is incredibly simple compared to some of the others to install. Just my personal opinion of course!

Hello
I have a 1999 GMC Yukon. Will the Yakima Powderhorn fit my factory luggage rack? Anyone have experience with mounting a rack to this style SUV?

Responded on

Yeh, yakima makes a product called mighty mounts which are designed to fit all factory bars. They cost about 40 bucks for a set but you can use them for pretty much any yakima product so they are incredibly universal.

Excellent rack

I have used this rack for several seasons and love it. I am a ski/snowboard instructor at a commuter mountain so this rack sees a lot of use during the winter. It is easy to use, can store 2 boards and a pair of skis (as long as the boards aren't wide and the skis aren't powder), and has reliable locks. The only downsides I have encountered with this system is having the locks/latches freeze shut with snow overnight, and having a whistling sound from wind traveling through the plastic parts next to a pair of skis in the rack, however, both of these issues are only occasional. I always lock the rack for travel to ensure that the bars are actually latched because with a lot of gear, the latches become quite 'strained'. The rack takes a bit of time to install initially, but after the ties are on, the rack part comes off very easily for summer storage. I have this rack on Subaru factory crossbars, very wide, and it fits great.
